The Miracle of the World Not Dwindling in the Night
The real masterpiece and the most famous monument of Old Russian architecture's St. Basil Cathedral on the Red Square. This name of the church's very popular and well known all over the world. Originally the church's named Pokrovsky Cathedral (Cathedral of the Intersection of the Blessed Virgin).
The cathedral's founded in 1552 to commemorate the annexation of the Mongol states of Kazan and Astrakhan to Russia. Since the storm of the city of Kazan, the capital of Kazan state, the cathedral was named Pokrovsky (Intersection).
For the Russians the Pokrovsky Cathedral became Moscow Jerusalem. And indeed it reminds of a small town with many churches. The architecture of the church is based on deep religious symbolism, as the cathedral was designed as an architectural representation of New Jerusalem. For example, eight onion dome-topped towers symbolize the day of Jesus Christ's Resurrection and the promised Kingdom of God that will begin after the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Besides, the Pokrovsky Cathedral can be treated as a symbol of Moscow as a capital of Russia. The small churches center round the central church like small Russian principalities centered around Moscow and as result of it united mighty Moscow State was formed.
The outstanding monument of architecture. Protected by the State.
