St Alexander Nevsky is one of my favorite saints. I have two icons of him in my prayer room. I first became aware of him at Our Lady of Kazan Skete in Santa Rosa, California in 1996. I was visiting the Skete and after the Divine Liturgy, I was looking at the icons. I came upon a very large icon (painting) of a warrior standing with a sword and wondered who he was. The Abbess, Mother Sussana, came up behind me and said "that is Saint Alexander Nevsky, he saved Russia from the Swedes". She went on to explain the battle at the River Neva and the life of the saint. I immediately got two icons of him.
