Contrast enhancing technique:

1. Working in the 16-bit mode gives smoother tonal curves and high dynamic range:


2. As you can see that the fresco painting is too bright. Use Curves (Ctrl+M) tool to darken highlights fringe:


3. To brighten up photo and restore details in shadows use shadow/highlights tool:


4. After you've tweaked your image you can always convert it to 8-bit.

5. File | Save for Web ...
