Yes, she is a nun, indeed. In the original version of this picture (that have 2048x1536 pixels) you can see that she have in hands a piece of wood and a small hammer made by wood as well. I don't know what is the English for these pieces. In Romanian we call it "toaca".
She announces in this way beginning of the Vesper.
