I've got a piece of advice: if the ceiling's not very high and if it's more or less bright (white) the flash should be directed not towards the face but just to the ceiling. But in such case the flash should be covered by any directing shield (for example, by a sheet of paper) for the focusing of the light.
The reflected soft light will be directed towards the main object of shooting.
