The money you see in this photo (20 dinars) is really small amount of money - about 2 euro :) Most people put a dinar, or two...So this is more a symbolical act than an act of boasting. :) If someone wants to give a more significant amount of money, they put it in the box, inform the church host (person who works there, looks after hygene, order etc.) or more often, simply use the bank account.

Gabriel77: It has been tradition to put money on the icon, or next to it ever since... There are also money boxes inside the church for special needs, e.g. for the church magazine, for the church choir, for the reconstruction of the church buiding... Howerver, offering money, flowers, towels, hankerchiefs, even socks, oil, flour, wine..and putting this next to the icon or the iconistasis has always been a tradition in this part of the country (south-east Serbia - a much poorer part of the country than the others).. Some ancient customs have been preserved here more than elsewhere..
