For Jmatusiak: this sort of confession happens in many places of the Orthodox world, especially at patronal feasts when there are huge crowds of people and not enough space in the church, or when confession held in front of the iconostasis would disturb other servicies going on on the church at the same time. T've seen this myself in Romania, too.

I don't understand this photo. It can't possibly be confession because it is not being done in front of an icon. To some this could look extremely inappropriate.
